Have you ever wondered what those weird random boxes are that you pass on the highway?
They don’t all look the same, and in all honesty with how modernized open source and software defined radio technologies it has become very easy for manufactures to develop quickly this type of product using a software coding approach to defining the already common radio product shared in multiple other products.
Just to be clear, your phone, & even vehicle, they all have bluetooth, even cars up to 10 years old typically had factory bluetooth options or other unique radio IDs in products activated or not such as onstar and now sometimes even built in wifi. That phone in your pocket traveling with you, probably has all those radios too. They’ve already identified your phone and vehicle uniquely and begin to learn who you travel with.
If they’re recording the MAC address of all devices passing by, calculating how long it takes a MAC address to get from point A to point B (these are ALL over i-75) you can already bet they can easily identify daily patterns and predict traffic which was probably the goal which funded the project for the data harvesting.
State Police can position themselves to catch a daily speeder between the end points at the predicted time, and this is all harmless data analytics, right? Can you see how tempted they will be to use this data for other “State” needs?
They can always prove they caught the repeat speeder by matching a MAC address to an individual traffic stop in progress. A trooper could someday be able to PROVE that the suspected MAC address never crossed over to Point B until released from the traffic stop.
They can also identify movement that might help them solve crimes, abductions, kidnappings, SO I am not totally against this, only against the states use and power over it.
But keep in mind, I, you, practically ANYONE could do this. There are many products like this available to you, me, whoever has a few hundred dollars. Terrorists? probably. If your like me and have a somewhat horrific experience with State level government… hahah
I could put up sensors at my property and certain locations and release the data open source or sell it to the highest bidder..
So we would be dumb to think that there isn’t someone else already doing this, right? who? Besides your big brother and Uncle Rick Snyder you’ll never know for sure… The product is now being marketed to businesses to track indoor facility movement and line wait time and busy estimations. Be ready for the world of open source. & you better keep it clean and honest my friends While your waiting for your ticket the trooper could be waiting to see if your vehicles MAC address and your personal cell phone match up for a habitual speeder. The guy tracked doing 146 2 in his new corvette 3 times last week will probably go to jail.
Officers could SOON be equipped with sensors that identify the MAC address of persons of interest and have alarms that go off in their car when they are coming near and through their live harvesting data can easily identify what road and direction they are CURRENTLY traveling. Guarantee you if its not functional today it will be soon.
